Great photography is a blend of creative ability and technical discipline. The challenge for most photographers is to develop their technical abilities to a level that allows them to conceptualise their own creative visions. My role as a tutor is to help you to fuseart and craft together and to introduce you new ways of looking at landscape.

My workshops are designed to maximise the photographic opportunities and to provide you with the best accommodation and food available in the area. Throughout the workshop, each client will enjoy personal tuition and feedback with the opportunity to participate in a group critique, which is always popular. Additionally, tutorials designed to help you build on what you already know will be given at appropriate times. My aim is to create a relaxed and informal atmosphere to allow you to develop regardless of where you are in your photographic journey.

So what experiencedo I need to join a Colin Prior workshop? Very little is the short answer. All I would ask is that you are familiar with your camera and know your way around it and by that I mean, for instance, that you understand the difference between aperture priority and shutter speed priority and under what circumstances you would choose one over another. These workshops are designed to help develop your personal skills and notto give primary instruction about basic camera functions and what they do.

Here’s what some photographers have said about the workshops.

Skye and Torridon

Hi Colin,
Wonderful locations, brilliant landscapes and intelligent positive critiques are for me what made the workshop such an enjoyable experience.  Thanks to you I have gone some way to ‘seeing’ beyond the obvious and have started to look within the landscape with a more discerning eye.

I have a long, long way to go but the flame has been rekindled and your sheer enthusiasm and in-depth knowledge of the subject matter has been inspirational.

Oh, and the accommodation was very comfortable, the food great and the company good fun – all in all, a great way to spend a few days and God willing I will be back.

Best Regards, Maurice Ullman

Skye - Colin Prior workshop

Dear Colin,

I just want to say a huge thank you for a brilliant workshop in Glencoe.  The weather may not have been ideal but it didn’t stop us from getting out and I have to say, getting some pictures that I’m really pleased with.  Your knowledge and expertise, guidance and patience are second to none and each time there is something different that sticks in my mind.  From the Assynt workshop it was using manual settings and the depth-of-field preview button, from Glencoe it will be the RGB histogram and using the camera as a scoping tool before I put it on the tripod.  You’ll make a photographer out of me yet!

Dear Colin

Many thanks for the wonderful Knoydart workshop last week.  Every day brought a new adventure, travelling by the boat Mary Doune to a different stunning location, most of which would have otherwise been very difficult to access.  It felt a real privilege to be in these beautiful places.  Highlights for me included the breath-taking view of the Skye Cuillin from SgurrnaStri, the glorious spring colours of the trees lining Loch Hourn and the dolphin and otter sightings. And then back to the Doune restaurant each evening for an unexpectedly excellent dinner!  Thanks, too, for your tutorial sessions – inspiring and full of practical advice.  Now to settle down and review the many hundreds of shots that I took!

I very much look forward to coming on another of your workshops before long.

All the best,Andrew

Many thanks for the memorable week spent in and around Knoydart last month. A fantastic venue at Doune, great food, good company, brilliant trips out on the boat with Andy to remote islands, Mediterranean weather on Skye, Rum and Canna, inspiring tuition from you and lovely whisky to round off some evenings. Have about 400 shots on my card with 20-30 that I am pleased with.

A unforgettable week spent with you and the rest of the group with an inspirational ‘Order from Chaos’ tutorial together with good advice for me about aperture settings, different to much read elsewhere, this will set the course for all my future landscape photography.

Many thanks, Glynne Knight

Hi Colin,

Sincere thanks for a very memorable photo workshop in Knoydart in May. I found it invaluable to draw from your years of knowledge and expertise in such an informal way.Even the professional photographers on the course deepened their understanding of landscape photography whilst sharing their knowledge with others. You have a rare quality of bringing out the best in people from all over the world whilst teaching them to create quality photographs.Everyone on our course enjoyed the content, accommodation, superb food and lasting friendship, which was as a result your care and attention to every last detail.

Best regards,Rob Spiers

Dear Colin

I just wanted to say a huge thank you for our really excellent course last week. I learned so much about technique, composition and equipment from you and now feel inspired to take my photography up a notch. Your passion for the landscape and knowledge of nature is awesome.  The group was a great mix and we had more and more fun as the course went on, helped by your great choice of The Ceilidh Place for eating. It was a personal challenge for me to join an unknown group who were all more knowledgeable than I was, but it went fantastically well for me. My Surrey walks seem very tame now and I plan to up my fitness by doing more challenging walks, so thanks for the inspiration there too.

Dear Colin,

I’ve written this recommendation of your work to share with other LinkedIn users:

‘Colin has rightly earned his place as one of the world’s leading landscape and travel photographers. His inspirational images not only create an emotional response in the viewer but equally an appreciation of the value of wild places, environment and indigenous cultures. However, there is much more to Colin than being a master of his art in the creation of spectacular imagery. Having attended two of his courses so far, his creative techniques are extremely thought provoking, challenging one to think outside of the box and to take the process back to what is core to the message being communicated by imagery or otherwise. His coaching and teaching skills are exceptional and the structured, well-paced and supportive environment of his courses are an ideal learning forum. In all these areas, many businesses, across a whole range of industries could learn from Colin’s approach, where the knowledge and skills imparted are transferable to other environments.’

Dear Colin

I have returned home excited and inspired by your teaching, feeling that it is now within my reach to take much better photographs.

The course was very intelligently structured and your modest personality made it possible for us all to benefit from your immense knowledge and experience. The excellent critiques of the photos we took after your tutorials were truthful and kind, and bruising no one, enabled us all to learn. The demonstration of key features of Lightroom was a revelation.

Thank you for the best course I have been on – terrific value for money!

With best wishes, Mike Butcher

Dear Colin,

Thank you for a fabulous weekend in Dunkeld. The combination of tutorials, practical exercises and post-practical-critique worked really well, and it is a tribute to your teaching that all of us made visible progress over the course of the weekend. An unexpected bonus was the insight into using Lightroom to enhance our pictures. I also really enjoyed the camaraderie that developed with the others on the course, creating a fun and supportive learning environment. I feel inspired to get out and further develop my newfound skills!

All the best, Lisa Norcross

Dear Colin,

Just a few words to thank you.My head is still full of wonderful memories. Bhutan truly has been an incredible and inspiring experience and I enjoyed every minute of it. It was just magic! I particularly liked your ‘Order from Chaos’ field exercises in the woods, rivers and waterfalls, your one-to-one feedback sessions, Borkpa portrait shooting in different places and the fun we had, together with the many discussions on photography or the future of Bhutan. Plus of course, last but not least, your positive energy, your sense of humour, your exotic accent many, many other things.

Such a memorable experience that I couldn’t resist registering for one of your Knoydart workshop in early May!
